This guide will help you find out if Express Entry is the best choice for you and your family. Stay with us!

What is Express Entry Canada?

Express Entry is an application management system used by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC) to manage and process applications received through Canada's three federal economic immigration programs for skilled workers. Express Entry is a competitive immigration system that ranks all eligible candidates against each other and then invites the best-ranked candidates to apply for permanent residency in Canada. Candidates are rated against each other based on age, education, language skills, work experience, etc. Under Express Entry, individuals and families wishing to reside in Canada can receive permanent residency in just a few months. This has been affected during the Pandemic however the Immigration officials are trying to find a solution to this matter.

How to get Express Entry Canada - A step-by-step guide

1.Determining eligibility

Express Entry applicants must be eligible under one of the following federal economic immigration programs.

  • Federal Skilled Workers Program (FSW)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Federal Skilled Trade Program (FST)

Part of the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) is aligned with Express Entry, but candidates must still qualify for one of the three federal programs to enter the Express Entry suite. Although the requirements of each Express Entry program are different, all candidates must have at least one year of professional work experience and a certain level of proficiency in a certified English or French language test. Canada also examines all Express Entry applicants for criminal history and medical issues that could make a person inadmissible.

Create an Express Entry profile

Eligible candidates must submit an Express Entry Profile to the Candidate Collection. The Express Entry Profile acts as an Expression of Interest (EOI). Qualified candidates will automatically receive points based on their credentials and be ranked compared to other candidates in the group. The rating score for Express Entry is based on the Comprehensive Rating System (CRS) and is calculated from 1200 points. Candidates can improve their ranking by taking steps to improve their CRS scores. The higher the volunteer CRS score, the more likely they are to receive an Express Entry Invitation (ITA) invitation

2. Create an express entry profile

Eligible candidates must submit an Express Entry Profile to the Candidate Collection. The Express Entry Profile acts as an Expression of Interest (EOI). Eligible candidates will automatically receive points based on their credentials and will be ranked compared to other candidates in the group. The rating score for Express Entry is based on the Comprehensive Rating System (CRS) and is calculated from 1200 points. Candidates can improve their ranking by taking steps to improve their CRS score. The higher the volunteer CRS score, the more likely they are to receive an Express Entry Invitation (ITA) invitation.

CRS points are used as the winning factor in Express Entry lotteries. This program is designed to predict a candidate's economic success in Canada. This criterion ranks candidates based on their work and educational background, language skills, and whether they have already received a qualified job offer or provincial nomination in Canada. Express Entry candidates can receive more points if they have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, have received a provincial nomination, and so on.

Eligibility for Express Entry and CRS scoring system

The Express Entry CRS scoring system allows you to check your eligibility for Express Entry and the total possible CRS scores at the same time. Before creating an Express Entry profile, take some time to find out which Express Entry program you may be eligible for and how competitive your profile is.

3. Creating a job profile (optional)

Express Entry candidates can register with Canada Job Bank (a free public resource used to help Canadian employers identify and select workers with the skills they need) without a job offer or provincial nomination invitation. This step was previously mandatory, but has been voluntary since June 2017.

4. Receive an invitation to apply (ITA)

The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC) conducts Express Entry Lottery at regular intervals (usually every two weeks). In these Express Entry lotteries, candidates above a certain rank are invited to apply for permanent residency in Canada. If the nominee is not invited, his / her profile will expire after 12 months and at this stage they can submit a new profile.

5. Improve your CRS score

Candidates in the Express Entry Pool who have not yet been selected can improve their Express Entry profile and score. They can do this by posting new and up-to-date information. These include: raising language scores, evaluating credentials, adding additional work experience, receiving a qualified job offer, or receiving a provincial nomination invitation.

6. Submit your application for permanent residence

If you receive an Express Entry (ITA) invitation, you will have 60 days to submit a full application for permanent residence. In this program you have to provide extensive personal information along with supporting documents. The entire application is sent electronically. After submitting your application, you will have to wait for the final decision. 80% of express entry requests are processed in six months or less. If your application is approved, you will receive permission to activate your permanent resident status in Canada.

What do you need to create your Express Entry profile?

You need three basic documents to submit your Express Entry profile. If you are interested in Express Entry, collecting these three documents should be your first step:

  1. Language Test: All Express Entry candidates must be proficient in English or French. You need a certified language test from a certified language test to submit your profile. The minimum score required varies between the three Express Entry programs. If you want to prove your proficiency in English, your options are the IELTS General Test or the CELPIP General Test. If you want to prove your proficiency in French, your options are the TEF test or the TCF test.
  2. 2. Evaluation of qualifications (ECA): ECA is the evaluation of non-Canadian education according to Canadian standards. It should be noted that education is only a mandatory requirement for the Federal Skilled Workers Program, but it is recommended that FST and CEC candidates also complete the ECA report, as training is an important component of the CRS score.

Note: ECA is not required for completed training programs in Canada.

  1. 3. Passport: A valid passport is required to send the Express Entry Profile. In very rare cases, alternative identification documents may be accepted when it is not possible to obtain a passport.

Once you have these three documents, you can create your Express Entry profile.

However, the following variables may extend this timeline and should be considered:
